Richmond, Virginia is called home by about 202,202 people and is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Richmond also has one of the oldest municipal park systems in the country, and has over 40 parks with a total of more than 1,500 acres. There are several parks located along the James River. These parks generally offer bike, hiking, and nature trails, and often overlook the scenic river. Many professional riders consider the mountain bike trail system in James River and Forest Hill parks to be one of the best urban trail systems. Parks are also located on two major islands in the river. Here there are frequently outdoor concerts and festivals during the spring and summer months. Byrd Park and Maymont are two other major parks located in the city. Byrd Park features a one mile running track with exersize stops, as well as a public dog park. There are also a number of small lakes that can be used for small boats, as well as an amphitheatre.
